Reflecting on Rail Live 2025

by | Jul 29, 2025

Back in June, Trevor Bradbury from the Pragmatex team attended Rail Live, the UK’s largest outdoor rail exhibition. With delegates from across the industry and an ever-evolving showcase of innovations, the event proved to be an action-packed and insightful few days.

From cutting-edge technology to plant maintenance systems and rolling stock demonstrations, there was plenty to take in. Rail Live holds a unique spot in the rail calendar — not just for its scale, but for the hands-on environment it offers. It’s one of the few opportunities to experience equipment and systems in situ, away from the desk and in the context they were designed for.

Since our last visit, we’ve seen the Porterbrook site become more modern and better suited to hosting this flagship industry event. The layout, infrastructure, and displays all reflected the rapid pace of change across the rail sector.

At Pragmatex, we have a vested interest in a range of systems and technologies — particularly when it comes to measurement solutions. This year’s event gave us the chance to explore the latest in measurement technology, which has the potential to help the industry operate more efficiently and safely.

There’s nothing quite like seeing products and innovations in their intended environments. Watching plant and rolling stock in action on a test track isn’t just fascinating — it provides a deeper understanding of how these systems work and what benefits they bring. This is exactly where Rail Live shines, by giving delegates a real-world perspective that’s hard to replicate in a presentation or online.

Beyond the technology, Rail Live is also about people. The event gave us the chance to reconnect with industry colleagues, forge new contacts, and strengthen existing partnerships. Networking remains a key part of why events like this matter — and why we’re committed to attending various events across the country.

That said, a familiar theme emerged in many of our conversations: frustration. Good ideas don’t always become good products — and good products don’t always make it to market. This echoes our experience with the First in Class project, and it’s something we at Pragmatex deeply understand.

The wider industry also seems to be in a holding pattern, awaiting direction. With the delay in establishing Great British Railways (GBR), uncertainty continues to cloud progress. The railway is ready for leadership — someone to take the reins and articulate a clear, confident vision for the future.

That’s why collaboration matters more than ever. Tackling challenges together and sharing knowledge is how we move forward, especially in uncertain times. The conversations we had at Rail Live reminded us of the importance of working collectively to find the solutions the industry needs.

It was an enlightening and valuable few days at Rail Live and we look forward to attending next year. If you have an innovation that you are looking to take into the rail sector or would like some guidance on navigating this process, get in touch with a member of our team on LinkedIn.
